Dr. Jack Flynn Wood, 80, of 59 Fairway Villa Drive, Fancy Gap, VA, passed away Sunday morning, March 29, 2009, at Village Care of King. He was born August 20, 1928, in Rockford, to the late Floyd and Lillian Flynn Wood. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chapman Flynn. Dr. Wood graduated from Copeland High School in 1948 and upon graduation was drafted by the Army. He served on the front lines in the Korean Conflict and was commissioned as a Sergeant First Class. Dr. Wood was presented with several medals of commendation, including a purple heart and bronze star for bravery and injuries received in battle. After his honorable discharge from the armed forces, Dr. Wood met his future wife, Grace Adams. They married and moved to Indianapolis, IN, so that Jack could pursue post graduate studies at Lincoln Chiropractic College, where he graduated in 1957. Upon receiving his doctorate, Dr. Wood established a successful chiropractic practice in Mount Airy. He treated hundreds of patients during his 37 year career, before retiring in 1994 to his beloved mountain home on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Dr. Wood had a great sense of humor and never met a stranger. He loved golf, fishing, hunting, motorcycles, and his dog, Casey. Dr. Wood is survived by a daughter, Annie Wood Jones and her husband, Tim, of Durham; his son, Matthew Flynn Wood and his wife and friend, Noelle, of Kensington, MD; his brother, Larry Wood and wife, Francis, of Thurmond; his sister, Judy Simmons and her husband, Johnny, of Ararat; and five grandchildren, Harrison Shanklin, Taylor Shanklin, Christine Wood, Catherine Wood, and Meagan Wood; as well as his former wife and friend, Grace Adams of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Dr. Wood was preceded in death by a son, Michael David Wood; and a brother, Joe Wood. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with services conducted by Dr. Charles Adams. At the conclusion of the service, the family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home.
