Dr. Robert Wesley Wrenn

Dr. Robert Wesley Wrenn, 68, passed away unexpectedly on vacation in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 21, 2016. Bob was born on May 6, 1948 in Mount Airy, NC to the late Aubrey Miller and Estelle York Wrenn. After moving to several towns in VA, SC, NC, and AL as a child, he and his family moved to Augusta, Georgia when he was 13. He loved Augusta, made many friends, and graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1966. It was during those high school years that he recognized his aptitude for science, began to love the game of golf, and learned to play the guitar. After high school, his formal education included an undergraduate degree from Davidson College, a Masters degree from Appalachian State University, a PhD from Bowman Gray School of Medicine, and Post Doctorate work at Emory University. After his education, he moved back to Augusta and spent his career teaching and conducting medical research at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He retired from the medical college in 2007 but continued to work as a part time instructor for several years. He married Jennifer Wright of Augusta in 1972. In 1980, when his daughter Katie was born, he assumed his favorite role, that of Dad, only to be paralleled by the birth of his granddaughter, Greer, in 2010, when he became Granddaddy. Bob was a gentle and kind man. He loved his family and was a golden example of generosity and thoughtfulness, never forgetting a birthday or holiday, and relishing every chance to go to the toy store and pick out just the right and special toy for Greer. He loved to laugh and read and was extremely well-informed. He was always willing to share his knowledge and, ever the teacher, he had a beautiful way of expressing himself and explaining information. He also loved the outdoors and particularly enjoyed fishing trips he had taken to the Vancouver area. He treasured the York farm in Surry County where his mother had grown up, and he was very proud of his nephew Kyle’s efforts to bring it to life again with his budding organic farm business. He is survived by his daughter, Katie Willimon and son in law Chip Willimon of Simpsonville, SC, along with his granddaughter, Greer, and a grandson to be born in December. Also surviving is a sister, Nancy Wrenn Montgomery (Conrad Carlton), a nephew, Kyle Montgomery, a step-nephew Robert Carlton, his former wife, Jennifer Wright Dahlen, numerous cousins, and special friends Dr. Dave Lause and his wife Cree, Robert and Gay Wright, and Tana Wright Owens. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church in Mount Airy, NC with Pastor Griff Gatewood officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:45 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall prior to the service.Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, 1446 Harper Street, Suite BT 1844, Augusta, GA 30912 or to First Presbyterian Church of Mount Airy, 326 South Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
