Dr. Stella Mae Venable Crum

Dr. Stella Mae Venable Crum, widow of Russell Crum, died Sunday, October 8, 2017. Her parents were the late Alonzo and Mallie Draughn Venable. She resided in White Plains, NC, as a child and moved to Fort Wayne, IN, in 1946. After the death of her husband, she moved to Florence, SC. Preceding her in death were a beloved daughter, Nancy Mae Bain Daenell; four brothers, Clarence Alonzo Venable, William Franklin Venable, Edward Roland Venable, and James Truman Venable; and a dear sister, Betty Lou Venable Tate. She is survived by her beloved son, James E. Bain, and his wife, Ronda, of Marion SC; a brother, Max W. Venable of Mocksville, NC; and a sister, Elizabeth C. Snyder, of Clemmons, NC. Also surviving are nine beloved grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sixteen nieces and nephews; and thirty-four great nieces and nephews. Dr. Crum attended White Plains School, Guilford College, and Indiana University at Bloomington, IN, receiving her Doctorate in Education from Indiana University. She taught at White Plains School, Ft. Wayne Community Schools, Indiana University, Ball State University, and retired from St. Francis University in Ft. Wayne, IN. She taught at all levels, undergraduate and graduate programs, supervised student teachers, conducted workshops for teachers and administrators, served on State and National Evaluation of School committees, was a consultant in reading for the United States Department of Education for three years, was in demand as an outstanding speaker on education, and retired as Professor of Education and Director of Student Teaching. Dr. Crum was recognized for Outstanding Achievement in Education by the World of Who’s Who of Women and awarded a Diploma of Commendation – 1973; Who’s Who of American Women – 1974; Who’s Who in the United States – 1975; Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans, 1975 and 1976; Dictionary of International Biography and awarded a certificate of Merit, London, England – 1972; named outstanding Educator for Excellence in Teaching by Alpha Delta Kappa – 1973; and honored by the National Education Association as an Outstanding Woman in Education – 1976. She was a life member of Pi Lamba Theta and Indiana Alumni Association. Dr. Stella Mae Bain Crum believed in the worth of the individual; she saw in each student his or her spark of divinity, the gift God gave them, and nurtured that spark into a glowing flame. She was truly a master teacher, and she will be missed by family and friends. A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 14, 2017, at 11:00 AM at White Plains Friends Meeting Cemetery in Mount Airy, NC. The family will receive friends Friday, October 13, 2017, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home, 206 West Pine Street, Mount Airy, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the White Plains Friends Meeting, 849 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
