Dr. Edwin Leon Wiles, 86, of Mount Airy, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, May 18, 2021, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Edwin was born January 7, 1935, in Danville, VA, the only child born to the late Clarence E. and Lillian Kate “Lillie” Biggs Wiles. He earned degrees from Guilford College, Wake Forest University, and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. Dr. Wiles taught biology and chemistry courses at Southern Wesleyan College in Kernersville, Governor’s School of North Carolina in Winston-Salem, and Surry Community College in Dobson. He taught for a total of 46 years, with 33 of these years at Surry Community College. Until his health declined, Edwin was an active member of Mount Airy Wesleyan Church, where he taught an adult Sunday school class. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine Midkiff Wiles of the home; a son, Mark Edwin Wiles and his wife, Carin, of Eden; a daughter, Angela Lorraine Grubbs and her husband, Robert, of Buford, GA; six grandchildren, Catherine Wiles Bolyard and her husband, Ethan, of Wilmington, Matthew Wiles and Madelyn Wiles, both of Eden, and Amber Grubbs, Ashlyn Grubbs, and Abbey Grubbs, all of Buford, GA; and four great-grandchildren. A service of worship and celebration of Edwin’s life will be held Friday, May 21, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Mount Airy Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Eric Smith and the Rev. Richard Loman officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the church. Due to public health concerns, attendees are requested to wear a face mask and practice social distancing.
