Mrs. Edith Martin Callaway, 86, of Mount Airy, passed away in the same room in which she was born on Friday, March 13, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Callaway was born February 26, 1923, in Surry County, to James Franklin and Willie Elizabeth Gwynn Martin. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Mrs. Callaway was a devoted member of Central United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Carolyn Callaway Rook of Mount Airy and Susan and Dub Evins of Miami, FL; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Anna Callaway of Mount Airy; grandchildren, Joel Callaway of New Haven, CT, Ben Callaway of New York, NY, Dan Callaway of North Hollywood, CA, Barry Rook and wife, Dawn, of Apex, Charles Rook of Mount Airy, Ellice Evins of Boston, MA, and Elliot Evins of Miami, FL; great-grandchildren, Marie Rook of Mount Airy and Shelton Rook of Apex; a sister, Sarah Davenport of Mount Airy; and a brother and sister-in-law, Roscoe and Florence Martin of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Callaway was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest M. Callaway; and four brothers, Franklin Martin, John Martin, Charlie Martin, and Zeb Martin. The funeral service will be held Sunday, March 15, 2009, at 3:00 PM at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Ferree officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday at the church from 2:00 until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 1909 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
