Edith Irene Hawks Combs

Mrs. Edith Irene Hawks Combs, age 76 of Cana, VA, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2008 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Combs was born in Carroll County, November 30, 1931 to Eugene and Annie Akers Hawks. She was a loving homemaker and was a member of Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church. Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Edgar Tate of Mt. Airy; four sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Paige Combs, Richard and Gail Combs, Sammy and Angie Combs, and Dwight and Tina Combs all of Cana; sixteen grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Gracie and Herman Sechrist of Biscoe, NC; Elza and J. D. Bowman of Ararat, VA; Bonnie and Claude Gwyn of Mt. Airy; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Claucy and Ella Hawks of Cana; Arthur and Launia Hawks of Mt. Airy; Rev. Marlie and Bertie Hawks of Winston-Salem; and Ollie Hawks of Cana, VA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Combs was preceded in death by her husband, David C. Combs, a son, William Combs and a brother Arlis Hawks. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Marlie Hawks, Elder Arwood Edwards and Rev. Donald Bryant, Sr. Mrs. Combs will lie in state at the church thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in King-Jones Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at Moody Funeral Home.
