Mr. Edsel Franklin Johnson, 82, of Ararat, passed away Tuesday morning, February 22, 2022, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Johnson was born April 2, 1939, in Surry County, one of five children born to the late Harvey Franklin and Ollie Mae Johnson Johnson. Edsel served our country in the United States Army in the early 1960s. He worked at Armtex in Pilot Mountain for nearly 30 years, and he later worked at Pike Electric. Edsel was a Christian and a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce Ann “Polly” Hill Johnson of the home; a daughter, Kimberly Bowman of Ararat; a son, Joseph “Joey” Johnson of Ararat; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Shelba and Don Whitaker of Ararat, and Jackie and the Rev. Alfred Cave and Judy Welch, all of Dobson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jason Bowman; and a sister and two brothers-in-law, Archie and Glenn M. Cox and Charles D. Welch, Sr. A graveside service will be held Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 3:30 PM at Little Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery, with Pastor Tim Morrison officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
