Mr. Edward Carlman Hiatt, 88, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2009, at Walnut Cove Healthcare. Mr. Hiatt was born January 5, 1921, in Patrick County, VA, formerly The Hollow, VA, the oldest of the five children of Edd and Earsley Boyd Hiatt. He retired after 21 years of dedicated service in the United States Navy, where he served during World War II and the Korean conflict. Mr. Hiatt also retired from Quality Mills, Inc. He was a member of Renfro Masonic Lodge #691 AF and AM and a member of Millington Masonic Lodge #671 in Memphis, TN. Surviving are his loving wife, Susan LuDale Weathers Hiatt of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Theresa Hiatt Sprague and Mark William Sprague of Greenville, NC; two grandchildren, Alexander Hiatt Sprague and Hannah Margaret Sprague; three sisters, Mary Irene Hiatt Simmons and Mildred Dorothy Hiatt Bondurant, both of Mount Airy, and Naomi Ruth Hiatt Venable of Clemmons; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hiatt was preceded in death by a sister, Delphia Fenton Hiatt. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at Grace Moravian Church, with the Rev. Tony Hayworth officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday at the church from 1:00 until the hour of the service. Burial will follow in God's Acre, with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Moravian Church, 1401 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
