Mr. Edward "Papa" Wilson Shockley, 92, of Cana, VA, passed away Saturday night, March 9, 2024, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Shockley was born October 12, 1931, in Surry County, the only child born to the late Woodrow Wilson and Ollie Mae McMillian Shockley. Edward worked as a supervisor at Lynne Hosiery for many years, along with owning and operating an apple and peach orchard. In his later years, he served the clients of NorthSide Mortgage Group with his smile, love, and gentle spirit. Edward was a true and faithful servant of the Lord. He was the oldest living member of Flat Ridge Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer and deacon chairman for many, many years. He is survived by a granddaughter and her husband, Carmen and Stan Smith; his great-grandchildren, Emilee Reece Watson, Carley Ann Smith, Jackson and Caroline Smith, and Macy and Austin Swartz; a special caregiver, Kelly Bowman; and his special neighbors, Jeff and Brenda Bowman. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shockley was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Frances Ramey Shockley; and a son, Larry Edward Shockley. The funeral service will be held Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Flat Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Bledsoe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. At other times, the family welcomes friends to the home of Carmen and Stan Smith at 142 Green Brook Trail, Mount Airy.
