Elder Walter Lee Hodge, age 96 of Martinsville passed away Monday, February 23, 2009 at the Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center in the Rangely Community. He was born on October 17, 1912 to the late James Meyer and Susie Frye Hodge. In addition to his parents, Elder Hodge was preceded in death by his first wife, Alpha Bowman Hodge; his second wife, Alma Ashburn Hodge; two daughters, Betty Harville and Clemmie Stanley; two sons, James W. Hodge and Frank Hodge, Jr.; one sister, Sadie Gammons; and one brother, Curtis S. Hodge. He was a member of Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church, and was an Elder in the Primitive Baptist Church for many years and preached at various churches all over the country.
Elder Hodge is survived by one son, Carl Lee Hodge of Greensboro, North Carolina; three daughters, Mrs. Billy (Margaret) Hensley, Mrs. Jackie (Barbara) Barbour, all of Ridgeway; and Carrie Vaughn of Stoneville, North Carolina; three step-sons, Dean Horton of Fayetteville, North Carolina, J. W. Horton of Collinsville; and Allen Hodges of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; one step-daughter, Deborah Lavinder of Bassett; 30 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; 55 great-great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Elder Hodge will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Stateline Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Milton Gunter, Clarence Bowman, Rodney Marshall and John Calhoun. Burial will follow in the Stateline Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, and at other times at the home of his daughter, Margaret Hensley, 1230 J.S. Holland Road, Ridgeway, Virginia. Memorials may be made to the Roanoke Mission Center, 402 4th Street, S. E., Roanoke, Virginia 24015, or to a church or charity of the donor's choice.
