Elder Walter E Thomas, 90, of Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Golden Living Center in Galax, VA. Elder Thomas was born March 25, 1919, in Surry County, to Grover Cleveland and Zilphia Jones Thomas. He served our country in the United States Navy during World War II and was an elder of the Primitive Baptist Church for many years. Surviving are his wife, Margie Gates Love Thomas of Mount Airy; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Rex Moxley of Galax, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Walter C. and Wanda Thomas of Hillsville, VA; a stepson, Dennis Love of Mount Airy; grandchildren, Lana Edwards and husband, Mike, Lisa Ward and husband, Andy, Anthony Thomas and wife, Angie, and Mindy Holt and husband, Jamie; stepgrandsons, Jerry Love and wife, Sandra, and Joey Love and wife, Lea; great-grandchildren, Mikala Edwards, Brandon Edwards, Jade Holt, and Mallie Thomas; a brother and sister-in-law, Oah and Margie Thomas of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law, Ruth Payne; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Elder Thomas was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene McCraw Thomas; a grandson, Steve Thomas; a sister, Violet Thomas; and brothers, Bruce, Ellis, Grover, Tyler, Cuban, and Harvey Thomas. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, conducted by Elder Jimmy Joyce and Elder Jimmy Lankford. Burial will follow in the Zion Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6:00 until 8:00 at the funeral home.
