Elder James Cletus Turner, Sr

Elder James Cletus Turner, Sr., age 94 of Stuart, passed away Thursday, November 10, 2011 at The Landmark Center in Stuart. He was born in Henry County on May 1, 1917 to the late Sam and Pearl Joyce Turner. In addition to his parents, Elder Turner was preceded in death by his first wife, Dovie Harbour Turner; two sons, Sonny and Sammy Turner; one daughter, Judy Durham; one grandson, Jeff Mays; one brother, Ed Turner; and three sisters, Aileen "Teeny" Smith, Lucy Gibson and Dorothy Helmstuttler. He retired from Bassett Industries, built and ran Turner's Grocery in Bassett, and pastored several churches of the Primitive Baptist faith. He was a member of Russell Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
Elder Turner is survived by his second wife, Marie Stowe Turner of the Landmark Center; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary T. Fulcher of Stuart, Marie and Frank Foley of Bassett; one step-daughter, Martha Ann Martin of Stuart; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry Turner of Bassett and Wayne Turner of Church Road, Virginia; five sisters, Frances Nelson of Martinsville, Mae Turner of Southern Pines, North Carolina, and Jean Chitwood, Nancy Edwards and Annie Crotts, all of Bassett.
Funeral services for Elder Turner will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elder Lowell Hopkins and Elder Mike Young officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
