Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson Ashburn, 94, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at Golden Living Center. Mrs. Ashburn was born December 13, 1915, in Surry County, to the late William Jefferson and Mary Alice Haynes Johnson. She was married for 73 years to the late Oliver Blum Ashburn, retired president of Granite Hosiery Mills. Mrs. Ashburn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Airy and for many years was active in the Eastern Star and Ladies Golf Association of Mount Airy Country Club. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Jim Sessoms of Friendsville, TN; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Debbie Ashburn of Edenton; four grandchildren, Amy Ashburn Lindsey of Raleigh, Lee Ashburn of New Bern, Jim Sessoms of Atlanta, GA, and Scott Sessoms of Asheville; four great-grandchildren, Kristen Lindsey, Lauren Sessoms, Will Sessoms, and Kate Sessoms; and a brother, Leon Johnson. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Ashburn was preceded in death by two sisters, Ocie McHone and Nina Boyd; and a brother, Tommy Johnson. A private graveside was held Friday, May 21, 2010, at Oakdale Cemetery with Dr. Roger Gilbert officiating. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 714 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
