Elizabeth Carol McKinney Johnson

Ms. Elizabeth “Carol” McKinney Johnson, 83, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday night, March 5, 2018, at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center. Ms. Johnson was born Christmas Day, 1934, in Galax, VA, one of six children born to the late Eli Grover “E.G.” and Loucinda Elizabeth “Cindy” Payne McKinney. Carol was a graduate of Franklin School, class of 1952. She retired as the manager from Goodwill Industries after many years of service. Carol was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. She is survived by a special granddaughter, Briana Kristina Smith Koons of Virginia Beach, VA; two great-grandchildren, Layla Elizabeth Koons and Charlotte Rose Koons, both of Virginia Beach, VA; a brother, Wiley Harold “Jack” McKinney of Mount Airy; a niece, Jennie Lowry of Mount Airy; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, Ms. Johnson was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Ann Johnson Smith; a son, Stephen Dayton Johnson; two sisters, Dorothy Madeline Lowry and Dora Margaret Speaks; and two brothers, Curtis Byron McKinney and Boyd Harmon McKinney. A memorial service will be held at a later date and a private interment will be held at Round Peak Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
