Elizabeth Ann Young Martin

Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Young Martin, 71, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday evening, August 17, 2024, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Martin was born December 25, 1952, in Surry County, the older of two daughters born to the late Wiley Leonard “Dick” and Mary Etta Steele Young. Elizabeth grew up in Mount Airy and graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1971. She continued her education at Surry Community College and then proudly graduated from Appalachian State University with her bachelor’s degree. Throughout her career in the North Carolina Public School System, she taught middle and high school math at North Stokes High School, Starmount High School, Gentry Middle School, and Mount Airy High School. Her career was marked by her unwavering commitment to her students, inspiring countless young minds with her passion for learning and belief in their potential. She will be deeply missed by her teacher colleagues, who valued her mentorship and friendship. As a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy, she served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, a cherished member of the chancel choir, and RA leader. Her singing voice was used to glorify the Lord, and she embraced every opportunity to use it for His glory. Additionally, she was Cub Master of Pack 595 and Pack 538 and was a member of the Mount Airy Jaycees. A diehard Carolina Tar Heel fan, her enthusiasm for the team was as vibrant as her zest for life. Her laughter and joy will be remembered by many, alongside her profound legacy of faith, service, and dedication. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Joshua Henderson and Candice Stonestreet Martin and Jeffery Leonard Martin and Meredith Leas; a granddaughter, Hailey Martin; a stepgrandson, Aiden Hocken; a sister, Lynnette Young; and a brother-in-law, Barry David Eller Martin. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her husband, Gregg Henderson Martin; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leon Henderson and Emma Eller Martin. A service of worship and celebration of Elizabeth’s life will be held Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church Columbarium, with the Rev. Jay Meadows, Dr. Roger B. Gilbert, and the Rev. Tony Goins officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, August 23, 2024, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
