Ella Mae Vernon Jones

Mrs. Ella Mae Vernon Jones, age 90 of Cana, widow of Isaac Arlis Jones, passed away Friday, September 21, 2007 at her home. Mrs. Jones was born in Carroll County, June 1, 1917 to William Henry "Billy" and Mary Matilda McCraw Vernon. She was a loving, caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother and was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church and was a prayer angel whom everyone called on in the time of need. Mrs. Jones was retired from Spencer's Inc. Surviving are five daughters and three sons-in-law, Mary and Wade Sechrist of Hillsville; Glenda Nunn; Virginia and Ralph Lendale Dawson; Janice and Rev. Roland McCraw and Rachel Dawson all of Cana; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Harold Jones and fiancee Bonita Shinault of Hillsville; Tommy and Rhonda Jones of Galax; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Virginia Vernon of Cana; and a special care giver, Rita Ayers of Mt. Airy. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by sisters, Julina Smith, Piercie Richardson, Gladys Vernon; and brothers, Willie Vernon, Harlie Vernon, Jake Vernon, an infant brother; and sons-in-law, James Nunn and Jerry Dawson. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Buster Sechrist. Mrs. Jones will also lie in state at the church thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday night from 7:00 to 9:00 at Moody Funeral Home.
