Mr. Ellard Vernon "Tom" Jarrell, 85, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at his home. Mr. Jarrell was born March 19, 1925, in Surry County, to the late Ellard Grady and Mary Leota Vernon Jarrell. He served our country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He retired as a solid waste manager from the County of Surry and continued the job of farming, which he loved, as long as his health permitted. Mr. Jarrell is survived by a daughter, Brenda White of Dobson; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles Jarrell of Ararat and Mal and Susan Jarrell of Mount Airy; three grandchildren and their spouses, Brandy Renee and Mark Mauldin of Mount Airy, and Lisa Kay and Tracy Johnson and Chris and Michelle White, all of Dobson; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Julie Jones of Ruther Glen, VA, and Becky Swift of Mount Airy; and a brother, Garner Jarrell of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jarrell was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene Dezern Jarrell; two sisters, Betty Schuler and Vera Park; and three brothers, Ellis Jarrell, Daniel Jarrell and Allen Jarrell. The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 6, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Joe Atkins officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Shelly Lowe and Carolyn McBride, for the wonderful care Mr. Jarrell received during his illness. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
