Elmer "Bud" Atkins

Mr. Elmer “Bud” Atkins, 85, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday, April 1, 2022, at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center.  Mr. Atkins was born September 29, 1936, in Surry County, to the late Coy and Mary McHone Atkins.  Bud proudly served our country in the United States Army.  He was a loving husband, brother, uncle, and friend that will be deeply missed by all that knew him.  Left to cherish his memories are his sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Eddie Ray Draughn of Mount Airy; along with several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Wilson Atkins; four sisters, Sally Holder, Alma Robertson, Marie Brintle, and Mary Ruth McGee; and six brothers, Nick Atkins, Junior Atkins, Curtis Atkins, Ernest Atkins, Max Atkins, and Fox Atkins.  The funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Pete King officiating.  Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard.  The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.  The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC  27030.
