Elmer Joe Ayers

Mr. Elmer Joe Ayers age 78 of 185 Terri Lane, Mt. Airy, NC widower of Mrs. Betty Sue Jarrell Ayers passed away Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born September 16, 1929 in Carroll County, VA to the late Clarence Alva and Ona Hiatt Ayers. He was a veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean War in Germany. Mr. Ayers was a member of VFW Post 2019 Mt Airy, where he served as commander for two years and in other various positions.. He attended Pleasant View Baptist Church and was retired from United Technologies. Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sharon and Mark O'Neal,. Mt. Airy, Linda and Rick Harris, Thurmond, and Susan Essick, Yadkinville, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Randy and Susan Ayers, Pilot Mountain, and Ricky Ayers, Winston-Salem, 8 grandchildren, Josh Leftwich, Casey Leftwich, Jennifer Simmons, Chase O'Neal, Travis Ayers, Heather Ayers, Zach Essick, and Chad Essick, four great-grandchildren, Zane Simmons, Brady Simmons, Kelsey Leftwich and Hannah Leftwich., three sisters, Esther Hendrick, Pulaski, VA, Thelma Ayers (Mr. Ayers "twin sister"), Jackson, NJ, and Lucy Hendrick, Fancy Gap, VA, a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Nell Ayers, Cana, VA, several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by four sisters, Hassie Ayers, Cassie Hiatt, Lassie Fleming and Gladys Willis and three brothers, Bobby Ayers, Hoston Ayers and Wayne Ayers. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mt. Airy conducted by Rev. Steve McCreary. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 Mt. Airy and Post 9436 Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends 12:00 Noon Tuesday until the hour of the service at Moody Funeral Home.
