Mr. Elmer Tompkins Swann, Jr., 85, of 141-2 Royal View Drive, Pinnacle, a native of Colonial Heights, VA, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and is now peacefully and joyfully at rest with the Lord. Mr. Swann was born March 20, 1925, in Dinwiddie County, VA, to the late Elmer T. Swann, Sr. and Inez Poland Swann. He was a retired whole sale credit manager with Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. He was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church in Mount Airy, NC, and a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Virginia during his youth. Elmer was also a proud 1946 graduate of the Thomas Dale High School in Chester, VA. Elmer served in the United States Army during World War II between 1943 and 1946 where he was stationed in Panama. He is survived by his wife, Mary Perkinson (Eloise) Swann in marriage for 57 years; two sons, David Randolph Swann of Dobson and Scott Tompkins Swann of Holly Springs; a brother, Bernard Claiborne Swann of Richmond, VA; three grandsons (his pride and his joy), Nathan Randolph Swann of Dobson, and Jeremy Swann and Stephen Swann of Holly Springs; and two devoted daughters-in-law, Joyce Drake Swann of Dobson and Janet Peterson Swann of Holly Springs; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Frances McKay Swann. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, January 28, 2011, at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, where his body will lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. The Rev. Robert McCrary will be the officiating minister. A second brief service will be held at Colonial Heights Baptist Church at 1:30 PM Saturday, January 29, 2011, with the Rev. Dr. Randall Hahn officiating. Interment will be on Saturday in Southlawn Memorial Park in Petersburg, VA. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, and also on Saturday at Colonial Heights Baptist Church from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Haymore Memorial Baptist Church Mission Fund, P.O. Box 27, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or the Colonial Heights Baptist Church, Swann Memorial Fund, 17201 Jefferson Davis Highway, Colonial Heights, VA 23834.
