Mrs. Elsie Vanner Thomas Jones, 90, of Cana, VA, passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 20, 2017, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Jones was born January 18, 1927, in Carroll County, VA, one of four children born to the late Charlie Moses and Mary Jane Edwards Thomas. Elsie retired as the cafeteria manager from Saint Paul Intermediate School after many years of service and attended Rocky Ford Christian Church. She is survived by a brother and two sisters-in-law, Clayton and Shirley Thomas and Gladys Thomas, all of Cana, VA; several nieces and nephews, Cynthia and Mike Collins of Ararat, Janet and Marvin Spicer of Dobson, and Jeffrey and Missy Thomas, Darren and Teresa Thomas, and Ginger Moore and Larry Reed, all of Cana, VA; and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, John Floyd Jones; a son, Wade Jones; a sister, Sarah Alice Thomas; and a brother, Edward Thomas. The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 22, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Rocky Ford Christian Church, with the Rev. Billy Moore, the Rev. George Randall, Jr., and Trey Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service.
