On Wednesday, August 7, 2013, God called home his daughter, Mrs. Elsie Lee Hiatt Taylor, 85, of 138 Fresno Way, Mount Airy, from Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy. Mrs. Taylor was born November 20, 1927, in Surry County, to the late Benjamin Franklin Hiatt and Bessie Lou Stephens Hiatt Ward. She was a homemaker and retired from Spencer's Inc. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Shelton Church of the Brethren. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Fred Chilton, Jr. of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Weldon and Lynda Taylor of Mount Airy; four grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and Sam Hawks of Dobson, and Jason and Susan Chilton, Kevin and Misty Taylor, and Bryan Taylor, all of Mount Airy; seven great-grandchildren, Shelbey Taylor, Camden Taylor, Lacey Taylor, Aaron Hawks, Keith Hawks, Isaac Chilton, and Hannah Chilton; an expectant great-granddaughter, Sarah Chilton; a sister-in-law, Matilda Taylor of Mount Airy; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Claybern and Peggy Taylor and Glenn and Eva Utt, all of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Martha Loggins, who Mrs. Taylor lovingly called "Grandma." In addition to her parents, Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband, James Hassell Taylor; three sisters, Shirley Utt, Edith McHone, and Zilphia Ann Hiatt; two brothers, Edward Hiatt and Herman Hiatt; a half-brother, Sandy Hiatt; and her stepfather, Milton Ward. The funeral service will be held Saturday, August 10, 2013, at 11:00 AM at Shelton Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Ted Turner and Dr. Darrell Tate officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Activities Department at Central Continuing Care, 1287 Newsome Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to extend a very warm and grateful thank you to the staff at Central Continuing Care and Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for the excellent care and support given to Mrs. Taylor during her illness.
