Emily Blum Smith

Mrs. Emily Blum Smith, 84, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday night, February 3, 2016, at Ridgecrest Retirement Community. Mrs. Smith was born October 12, 1931, in Forsyth County, the only child born to the late Frank Leonidas and Helen Woolley Blum. Emily graduated from Summit School and Salem Academy in Winston-Salem and attended Mount Vernon Junior College. Mrs. Smith was a lifetime member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and an emeritus member of the Surry Arts Council. Emily was a dedicated member of Central United Methodist Church for many years. She was an avid Duke Blue Devils fan and she truly loved her “home away from home” at Pawleys Island, SC. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Emily and Steve Loftis and Helen and Paul Patterson, all of Mount Airy; a grandson and his wife, Rob and Andria Loftis of Atlanta, GA; a sister-in-law, Love Diffee Smith of Mount Airy; two nephews, Raymond Smith, II of Winston-Salem and Mike Smith of Newport Beach, CA; and special friends, Sam and Celia Gwyn of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, James Hadley Smith; a brother-in-law, Raymond A. Smith; and her canine companions, Lucy, Pawley, and Alice. The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 4:00 PM at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Muckler, Major Michael Rodgers, and Major Susan Rodgers officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 3:00 until 4:00 PM at Central United Methodist Church. At other times, the family welcomes friends to the home of Emily and Steve Loftis at 1430 Henri Street, Mount Airy, or the home of Helen and Paul Patterson at 122 Club View Drive, Mount Airy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Ridgecrest Retirement Community and the staff at Home Instead Senior Care, especially Van Lankford, Kathy Marion, Rebecca Michaels, Sandra Broughman, and Maya Kunce. In lieu of flowers, Emily requested that memorial contributions be made to the Mount Airy Salvation Army Camp Fund, 651 South South Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or the Altar Guild at Central United Methodist Church, 1909 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
