Mr. Emmett Lee Creed, 89, of 605 Old Creed Road, Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday morning, August 29, 2012, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Creed was born January 10, 1923, in Surry County, the son of the late Richard Zan and Minnie Alberta Smith Creed. Lee served our country as a private first class in the United States Army during World War II. He worked as an automatic weapons crewman among Battery D 389 Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in the Philippines and New Guinea. As a result of his bravery, dedication, and active combat service, he was decorated with the American Theater Service Medal, an APT Service Medal with a bronze service star, a Philippine Liberation Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. Lee worked on the family farm for many, many years and raised tobacco. He will be remembered by his family as a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elaine Hall Creed of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Richard Wactor of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Timmy and Karen Creed of Mount Airy; two grandsons, Zachary Creed and Jonathan Creed; a sister, Faye Danley of Mount Airy; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Clayton Creed, Elbert Creed, and Coy and Ila Mae Creed, all of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Creed was preceded in death by a sister, Emmie Susan Creed Crissman; and two brothers, James Anderson Creed and Richard Alvin Creed. The funeral service will be will held Saturday, September 1, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Jeremy Morton and Brother Chris Danley officiating. Burial will follow in the Dover Baptist Church Cemetery, with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
