Mr. Emmitt Grant Martin, Sr., 90, of 695 Old Buck Shoals Road, Mount Airy, passed away Sunday morning, November 16, 2008, at Golden Living Center. Mr. Martin was born May 29, 1918, in Surry County, to the late Frank and Polly Bowman Martin. Emmitt was a veteran of the United States Army, retired from Duke Power after 35 years of service, and a blacksmith and wheel right. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Irvin Gore and Linda and Lester Collins, all of Mount Airy; a son and two daughters-in-law, John and Genevieve Martin and June Martin, all of Mount Airy; thirteen grandchildren and their spouses, Robin and Brent Hawks of Boonville, John Martin, Jr. and Teresa Martin, Bill and Flo Martin, Bryan and Becky Martin, Marie and Patrick Hawks, Janet and Trent Childress, Andy and Tonya Martin, Brad and Jennifer Collins, and Amanda Collins, all of Mount Airy, Sherry and Joe Livingston of King, Kathy and Jonathan Sechrist of Westfield, Julie and Jeff Smith of Madison, and Scott and April Collins of Dobson; twenty-three great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Maretha Martin Mabe of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Mozelle Mabe Martin; a son, Emmitt Grant Martin, Jr.; two sisters, Effie Horton and Sarah Snow; and three brothers, John Martin, Jack Martin, and Clint Martin. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Tommy Floyd, and burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Anne and Irvin Gore, 637 Old Buck Shoals Road, Mount Airy. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Golden Living Center, especially Pam, Mary, Tim, Roxie, Kathy, and Karen, for the love and care given to their father.
