Essie Slate Evans

Mrs. Essie Slate Evans, age 89 of Evans St., Mt. Airy widow of the late Lonnie Edward Evans, passed away at her home May 26, 2007. Mrs. Evans was born in Patrick County, VA, January 28, 1918 to the late Joe and Mae Cox Slate. Family was so very important to Mrs. Evans, she was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a homemaker and attended Old Hollow Primitive Baptist Church. Surviving are, a daughter, Shirley Martin of Mt. Airy; grandchildren, Kim and Kip Danley, Todd Evans, Angie and Anthony Thomas, Keith and Martha Martin; great grandchildren, Anna Martin, Adam Martin, Nichole Danley, Hunter Danley, Heath Danley, Fallon Evans, Kadyn Evans and Mallie Thomas; twin sister, Bessie Cooke of Mt. Airy and sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Forris Thompson. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by a son, Mickey Evans; four sisters, Annie Slate, Eloyes Holcomb, Gladys Dunbar, Cassie Branch; three brothers, Roy, Coy and Herbert Slate. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Monday, May 28, 2007 at Skyline Memory Gardens by Keith Martin and Rev. Wendell Horton. The family will receive friends Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy from 12:30 PM until the time of the service.
