Mrs. Ethel Puckett “Ep” Hiatt Atkins, 89, of Mount Airy, left her family and loved ones on Saturday afternoon, May 21, 2022, to be with her Lord.  Mrs. Atkins was born April 7, 1933, in Surry County, the daughter of the late David Lafayette and Ethel Mene Puckett Hiatt.  “Ep” graduated from Flat Rock High School and Brigham Young University in Provo, UT.  She taught at White Plains High School, Surry Central High School, and East Surry High School and later worked locally for the United States Census Bureau and for Hiatt and Hiatt law offices as a paralegal.  Throughout, she was devoted to her LDS faith and community and to her family.  She enjoyed gardening and puzzle solving and was always generous to philanthropic organizations.  She is survived by her children, Pepper (Tim) Shelton, Broadus Zane Atkins, and Lisa A. Atkins; her grandchildren, Alyssa Venable, Calvin Venable, Nash (Kate) Atkins, Olivia Venable, Carli Venable, George Atkins, and Jackson Atkins; two great-grandchildren, Elle Atkins and Riley Atkins; two sisters, Portia Hansen and Anne Madsen; a brother, Ephraim M. (Amy) Hiatt; and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Atkins was preceded in death by her husband, Broadus Dock Atkins; two daughters, Suzanne Atkins and Dolly Dione Atkins; a grandson, Dylan G. Venable; and seven brothers, Junior L. Hiatt, V. Talmage Hiatt, Rudger P. Hiatt, Wilbur D. Hiatt, David H. Hiatt, Paul N. Hiatt, and William S. Hiatt.  A graveside service will be held Friday, May 27, 2022, at 2:00 PM at the James Monroe Hiatt Memorial Cemetery, with Bishop Kevin Haynie officiating.  The family will receive friends Friday from 12:00 until 1:30 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.  In lieu of food and flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 1427 Edgewood Drive, Suite 101, Mount Airy, NC  27030.
