Mrs. Etta Mae "Granny" Peele Thompson, 93, of 579 Farmers Road, Ararat, VA, passed away Wednesday morning, March 16, 2011, at her home. She was born July 18, 1917, in Patrick County, VA, to the late Luther and Susan Marshall Peele. She was a homemaker, a retired farmer, and a member of Willis Gap Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Geraldine and Roy Smith, Lois Nester, and Diane and Randy Collins, all of Ararat, VA; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Wesley and Barbara Thompson and Lonnie Thompson, all of Ararat, VA, and Roger and Alice Thompson of Mount Airy; nineteen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Thompson; a son-in-law, James Nester; a half-sister, Evaline Marshall; and a half-brother, Howard Peele. The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 19, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Rickey Martin and the Rev. Billy Stegall officiating. Burial will follow in the Willis Gap Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
