Ms. Eva Mary Mayes Atkins, 83, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Ms. Atkins was born June 10, 1926, in Surry County, to Joe and Myrtle Calloway Mayes. She was employed with Mount Airy City Schools in ELINK in which she helped many families in the literacy program. Ms. Atkins was very active in her church and was a strong supporter to all her family. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bruce Nations of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Barbara Atkins of Mount Airy and Rocky and Carolyn Atkins of Dobson; grandchildren, Phillip Atkins and wife, Vickie, Tabatha Cox and husband, Jeff, Penny Tilley and husband, Mark, Freedom Horton and husband, Kerry, Jonathan Nations and Megan Arnold, Jennifer Gardner and husband, Robbie, and Mitchell Atkins; step grandchildren, Sendee Casstevens and husband, Tony, Robin Barger and husband, Brian, Amy Davis, and Heather Marsh and husband, John, and Leslie Atkins; twenty-two great-grandchildren; special adoptive grandchildren, Myra, Summer, and Cory; a sister, Edith Amburn of Lowgap; a brother, Joe Mayes of Longs, SC; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ms. Atkins was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Atkins. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Amazing Grace Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jonathan Barker and the Rev. Sammy Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, and other times at her home, 255 Beech Creek Trail, Mount Airy.
