Mrs. Eva Lee Haynes Gardner, 88, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday, January 10, 2011, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Gardner was born February 15, 1922, in Surry County, to the late Rufus and Shirley Coleman Haynes. She grew up in Fancy Gap Baptist Church, where she served as pianist until she married and moved her membership to Maple Grove United Methodist Church, where she also served as pianist. After graduating from Franklin High School, she was employed by Renfro Hosiery Mill except for a period of time during World War II when she took a job at the Carbon Plant in Winston-Salem, which was producing a product to help the war efforts. Mrs. Gardner is survived by her husband of 60 years, Sidney Maxford "Max" Gardner of the home; a brother, Worth Haynes of Mount Airy; a sister, Frances Williams of Roanoke, VA; two nieces; eight nephews; and a sister-in-law, Mary Haynes. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by a brother, Conrad Haynes. The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 15, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Maple Grove United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Buffkin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, January 14, 2011, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state for 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. A special thanks is extended to a devoted caregiver, Carolyn Davis, wonderful neighbors and church friends, the Surry County Senior Services, and to all who have been there for Eva during her lengthy illness.
