Mrs. Evon Halsey Jenkins Cook, 84, of 147 Fluffy Lane, Mount Airy, passed away Friday morning, January 28, 2011, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Cook was born November 7, 1926, in Ashe County, daughter of the late Everett and Lena Halsey Jenkins. Evon graduated from Piney Creek High School in Ashe County and the Martin Memorial School of Nursing in 1948. She worked as a registered nurse in the surgical unit at Northern Hospital of Surry County for several years. Mrs. Cook was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church and Ararat Chapter #368 Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Patricia Cook and her husband, Dr. Alan Schwemlein, of Cincinnati, OH, and Cynthia Cook Jones and her husband, Jimmy Jones, of Pinnacle; five grandsons, Jason Jones of Greensboro, Jordan Jones and his wife, Kerry Jones, of Cary, James Schwemlein and his wife, Patrice Schwemlein, of Washington, DC, Jacob Schwemlein, a student at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, and Justin White of Ararat; two sisters, Maxine Graybeal of Christiansburg, VA, and Billie Hall of Aberdeen, MD; a sister-in-law, Lee Jenkins of Ellicott City, MD; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Franklin "Joe" Cook; and two brothers, Ronald Jenkins and E.J. Jenkins. The funeral service will be held Sunday, January 30, 2011, at 3:00 PM at Holly Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wayburn Mosley and the Rev. Lanny R. Atkins officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with graveside service conducted by Mount Airy Chapter #18 Order of the Eastern Star. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Holly Springs Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Northern Hospital Foundations, P.O. Box 1101, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Evon's caregivers, including Heather Bedsaul, Peggy Bedsaul, Linda Cannoy, Evelyn Davis, Nancy Harold, Christine Mabe, and Cathy Schall, who provided such excellent assistance and affection during the past several months of her declining health.
