Mr. Foy Winfred "Sandy" Tate, 78, of 1473 Simpson Mill Road, Mount Airy, passed away Friday, February 26, 2010, at his home. He was born January 3, 1932, in Surry County, to the late John Emmett Tate and Vesta Leftwich Tate Richardson. He was the former owner and operator of Sandy's Knitting Company and was a member of New Charity Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Melba Gentry Tate of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Tammy Tate, Jeffery and Portia Tate, Larry and Tammy Tate, and Christopher and Sarah Tate, all of Mount Airy; six grandchildren and three spouses, Candice Tate of Mount Airy, Jennifer and Ross Pate of Jonesborough, TN, Tabitha and Adam Jones of Pilot Mountain, Joshua and Jessica Tate of Kernersville, Bradley Tate of Mount Airy, and Chad Tate of Mount Airy; two great-grandchildren, Abigail Hicks and Nolan Edward Jones, both of Pilot Mountain; a half-brother and his wife, Don and Pat Richardson of Mount Airy; an aunt, Marie Holder of Mount Airy; and a nephew, Jackie Ray Tate of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tate was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Delano Tate. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, March 1, 2010, at New Charity Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Trent Lyons and the Rev. Hank Robertson. Burial will follow in the Ivy Green Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Foothills Food Pantry, 233 Cooper Street, Dobson, NC 27017.
