Frances Elizabeth Mills Good Coffey of Altavista, Virginia passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013, at the Skilled Nursing Facility of Northern Hospital of Surry County, Mt. Airy, NC. She was 97 years old. Born September 23, 1915, she was the daughter of Walter Coles (Buck) Mills and Mabel Jackson Mills. She was predeceased by parents; her husbands Kermit Tazewell Good in 1951 and John Alden Coffey in 1999; her son Ted Good; brothers Jim, Jack, Shirley, and Charlie Mills, and infant sister Helen; and son-in-law Patrick Barfield. She is survived by her daughter Brenda Barfield of Mt. Airy, NC; grandson Teddy Good II of Winchester, VA; and granddaughter Joy Good Shreck and her husband Lanny and son Stephen of Bunker Hill, WV; sister Betty Jones of Hurt, VA; sisters-in-law Estelle Mills, Christiansburg, VA and Dorothy Mills, Yorktown, VA; a special nephew Gerald Mills, Christiansburg, VA; 3 step-granddaughters, Mrs. Mary Barfield Marion and husband Darrell of Mt. Airy, NC, Mrs. Jennifer Barfield Barker and husband Paul of Pilot Mt., NC, and Mrs. Cynthia Barfield Lamb and husband Glenn of Mt. Airy, NC and 10 step-great-grandchildren; along with several other nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews; and a special friend and neighbor, Millie Burgess. Mrs. Coffey worked for over 20 years for Leggett Department Store and was a homemaker. Mrs. Coffey was a dedicated Christian and had a deep love of God, family, and country. During the time her children were in school, Mrs. Coffey was a member of the Renan PTA, homeroom mother, and assisted with a variety of school functions. She was active in her churches, Piney Grove Baptist in Gretna, VA, and Central Baptist in Altavista, VA. While at Piney Grove, she worked with the RA's, was church treasurer, member of the WMU, and active on various other committees. At Central, she was secretary of the Judson - Wright Circle, member of the WMU, served on the Social Committee, Long-Term Planning, and Last Supper Committees, as well as participating in numerous church activities. Mrs. Coffey was active in the community, being named with her husband John Coffey, as Citizen of the Year by the Woodmen of America in 1983. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Club where she won several awards for her crocheted work. Mrs. Coffey lived independently until she was 92 when she moved to NC to be near her daughter and was active until several months prior to her passing. She enjoyed crafts and word games and puzzles, especially Scrabble and was participating in that pastime until shortly before her death. Her funeral will be conducted at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home in Gretna, VA, on Friday, March 8, 2013, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church, 515 Seventh Street, Altavista, VA 24517, the Altavista Life Saving Crew, 1510 Main Street, Altavista, VA, or to the charity or program of the donors' choice.
