It is with great sadness that the family of Frances Cook Holder announce her passing on April 8, 2024, in Surry County at the age of 83. She was born in Surry County to James W. Cook and Maude Shackleford Cook. She graduated from Guilford College with a bachelor’s degree in English, where she was a college marshal and an officer of Guilford College Scholastic Society. She also earned master’s degrees at Appalachian State and University of North Carolina – Greensboro. She taught at Mount Airy High School, North Surry High School, and East Surry High School; she ended her career at Surry Community College. She was an avid reader and loved the outdoors while gardening, horseback riding, and long walks in the woods. She especially loved making memories with her beloved children and grandchildren on family trips. One of her great loves was exploring the world, with trips to Europe, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States. She loved studying the Bible and attending Ivy Green Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Wayne Holder, and her brother, Jimmie Cook. She will lovingly be remembered by her children, Todd (Anne) and Helena (Matt) and her grandchildren Evan and Corbin Holder. Also, she is survived by her brother Ken (Barbara) and nephew Christian Cook (Annie) and his children Isabella and Elizabeth Cook. Funeral services will be held on Saturday April 13, 2024, at 3:00pm in the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service. A private burial will follow the service at Ivy Green Baptist Church Cemetery.
