Mr. Frank LeRoy Smith of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community, Winston Salem, died on November 14, 2006. He was born June 15, 1908 in Mt. Airy. His parents were Fitzhugh Lee Smith and Lula Case Smith. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Laila Wright Smith and his second wife, Ann McNairy Smith. He is survived by his children, Betsy Smith Menefee of Leola PA, C. Phil Smith of San Ramon, CA and E. Sue Smith of Durham, NC and step children, Carolyn Mckinney of Greensboro, NC, Ruth Miller of Raleigh, NC, and Becky Brown of North Fort Myers, FL and grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In 1929, Mr. Smith graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with an AB degree in math and physics. He served in the US Army Air Corps 1929 - 1931 and the Reserves 1931-1936. From 1922 through 1973 he worked at the North Carolina Granite Corporation in Mt. Airy beginning as payroll clerk, then treasurer and secretary and at retirement, Sr. Vice President. He served on the Board of Directors until 1996. Throughout his lifetime he was active in many civic community organizations, often helping to found new ones, serving on boards of directors or fund raising: Boy Scouts of America, Hope Valley, Inc, of Dobson, Reeves Community in Mt. Airy, United Way, Four Way Volunteer Fire Department, Mt. Airy Rescue Squad, Salvation Army Advisory Committee, Bethlehem Center in Winston Salem, Arbor Acres Triad Methodist Home, American Freedom Association. He was a faithful member of the Methodist Church, first in Mt. Airy at Central United Methodist Church and then in Winston Salem, Centenary United Methodist Church. He taught Sunday School, served on boards, did Lay Ministry and sang in the choir. He was especially dedicated to the concept of world law and freedom and helped found the American Freedom Association. He was an avid fisherman and UNC Alumnus. He loved music, singing, performing, painting, gardening, the out of doors, and a good debate. He was especially fond of his many friends and the staff of Arbor Acres where he had resided for more than twenty years. A memorial service to celebrate his life will take place on November 21, 2006, at 2:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall of Arbor Acres. 1240 Arbor Rd, Winston Salem, NC.
