Mr. Fred Thompson Goins, 91, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Goins was born May 26, 1925, in Surry County, the son of the late Reid and Lonie Byrd Goins. He retired from the United States Postal Service after 30-plus years of service and was a member and deacon of Bannertown Baptist Church for more than 50 years. Fred proudly served our country in the United States Navy during World War II, and was an active member of numerous civic organizations, including being a founding member of the Flat Rock Ruritan Club and a past president of American Legion Post #123 and the Kiwanis Club. He was a devoted and loving husband to Josephine “Jo” Collins Goins of the home and an adored “Poppy” to his grandkids. He is also survived by a son and two daughters-in-law, Dennis and Dianne Watson Goins of Alexandria, VA, and Anita Goins of Mount Airy; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Goins (Mike) of Austin, TX, Sarah Goins of Alexandria, VA, and Suzanne Lynch (Johnny) of Mount Airy; two stepdaughters and a stepson, Twinkle C. Ireland (Roger) of Hamptonville, Teena C. Macemore (Wayne) of Yadkinville, and Tim Collins of Yadkinville; his stepgrandchildren, Natalie Morgan (Cameron) of Benson, the Rev. Nicholas Poindexter (Twinkle) of Boonville, Ethan, Trace, and Trevor Collins of Yadkinville, and Braedon and Colby Macemore of Yadkinville; six great stepgrandchildren; a sister, Margaret McBride of Thomasville; and a brother, Ray Goins (Vernell) of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Goins was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet S. Goins; a son, Fred “Freddie” Goins, Jr.; a stepgrandson, Austin Macemore; a sister, Hattie Sparks; and four brothers, F.H. Goins, Claude Goins, Arthur “Bud” Goins, and Harrison Goins. The celebration of life service will be held Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 1:00 PM at Bannertown Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mickey Cogdill, the Rev. Nicholas Poindexter, and Dr. Bill Guthrie officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends preceding the service from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Bannertown Baptist Church Building Fund, 1834 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to Melissa Allen and Anita Wallace of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for their wonderful care for Fred during his illness. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
