Mrs. Freda Mae Hiatt Hawks, 74, of 143 Poteat Road, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Hawks was born November 22, 1936, in Surry County, to the late Howard and Maggie Hall Hiatt. She retired after many years of service from AAA Drug Store. Mrs. Hawks was a member of The Shelton Church of the Brethren. Surviving are her husband, Wilbur Hawks of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Rick York of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lane and Bonnie Hawks of Mount Airy and Brent and Robin Hawks of Boonville; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Julie and Matthew Newton of Raleigh, Joni Seivers of Wilmington, Lindsay and Jonathan Stanley of Mooresville, Engle and Brian Balzer of Charlotte, Kellye York of Mount Airy, Jared and Amy Hawks of Boonville, Allison Hawks of Baton Rouge, LA, and Kaitlyn Hawks of Boonville; two great-grandchildren, Laila Hawks of Boonville and Mattison Newton of Raleigh; and two brothers and three sisters-in-law, R.J. and Betty Hiatt, Russell and Addie Hiatt, and Parabell Hiatt, all of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hawks was preceded in death by two brothers, Porter Hiatt and Wendell Hiatt. The funeral service will be held Monday, January 31, 2011, at 11:00 AM at The Shelton Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Ted Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 AM until the time for the service at The Shelton Church of the Brethren. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for all the love and care given to Mrs. Hawks while under their care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
