Freddie Lee Hiatt

            Freddie Lee Hiatt took his journey home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at the Blue Ridge Rehab in Martinsville, VA.  He was born 7/5/1944 in Nottoway County, VA the son of the late Fred Nealy Hiatt and Virginia Elizabeth Rockwell.  He is survived by two children:  Alpha Marie Hiatt and Robin Lee Hiatt both of Stuart; and a half-sister, Patricia Ann Hiatt Harbour of Patrick Springs.  He is also survived by his former wife, Margaret Gay Martin Hiatt of Stuart.  He was predeceased by his grandparents, Ivory (Ida) Kapple and Mack Nealy Hiatt; and Oscar McClellan Rockwell & Bessie Lavon Kreider; his great-grandparents Levi Johnson (Sherman) Hiatt and Elizabeth T. (Tallie) Hiatt; Augustus Kapple and Martha Ann Pruitt, and Dixon Richard Rockwell & Delphenia Leona (Della) Bergman.  He was also predeceased by his step-mother Alpha Nell Simmons Hiatt Lawson, two half-brothers, Daniel Bruce Hiatt and Michael Morgan; and a half-sister, Janice Ann Morgan Tomlinson.   

            Freddie especially loved his grandmother, Ida Kapple Hiatt, who helped raise him after the divorce of his parents when he was only 2.  Granny Hiatt, as he called her, was a poor, humble woman with no education but she loved the Lord and instilled that in all who knew her and the seed she planted continues on today in the generations now living.  She took wonderful care of Freddie.  Virginia Loggins took care of Freddie when his father was running the Stuart Taxicab Service and she would tell Alpha of what a pretty little boy he was and she and Granny Hiatt were two people who made a major difference in his life.  Virginia, may God bestow his bountiful blessings upon you.

            Freddie Lee owned and operated an Antique Shop in downtown Stuart at the T.J. George Bridge (he would go on buying trips to Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey to furnish the store with antiques and collectibles), he was a contractor for Humble Oil & Refinery Company of Richmond, VA, worked for Polo Anglin retreading tires, helped move and setup mobile homes with his father, sold storage buildings for Economy Manufacturing in Bassett and Priddy’s Campers & Buildings out of Sophia, WV.,  ran a used car lot where Carter Bank & Trust is today, sold used auto parts on Rt. 58, and then went into the recycling business at Fred’s Trading Post in the building directly across from Walmart, ran a wrecker service, and a snowplowing business.  Freddie enjoyed taking care of friends, family, and his many animals especially Little Fred his cat who was a dear companion to him.  In his youth, he enjoyed fishing, and taking the family to the Lakeside in Salem and vacations in Florida and he especially liked St. Augustine.  Prior to his going into the nursing home he would visit nursing homes,  Walmart, and his church handing out candy, and even at Heritage Hall Laurel Meadows Nursing Home in Laurel Fork, he was known as the candy man.  Freddie Lee was saved in 2001.  He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Claudville.  Former Pastor Jerry Whitlow baptized him.

            A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, August 12. 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, VA.  Pastor Dale Belcher will officiate with singing by Sue Nester.  Memorial donations made be made to the Trinity Christian School, 14 Gammons Road, Stuart VA 24171, PAWS, P.O. Box 743, Stuart, VA 24171, or Clover Cat Rescue, P.O. Box 829, Stuart, VA 24171.  A special thank you is extended to Blue Ridge Rehab in Martinsville and Dr. Favero, Liberty Home Care & Hospice of Danville, Sovah Health Martinsville especially Dr. Gomez, Dr. Rawla, Dr. Fasahat, and all the staff on the 4th and 5th floors.  A special thank you also to Jimmy McHone, Gary Hunt, Frances Smart, and Shelby Blankenship.  And a special blessing is wished upon Freddie’s aunt Margaret Ruth Hiatt Turner who is now 93 years old.  As we rejoice in Freddie’s homegoing, we extend this special invitation to you…..”Get Saved, and Come Join Him.”
