Garnett Jefferson "Jay" Cecil, Jr.

Mr. Garnett Jefferson “Jay” Cecil, Jr., 73, of Mount Airy, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday morning, August 18, 2021. Mr. Cecil was born July 23, 1948, in Grayson County, VA, one of seven children born to the late Garnett Jefferson Cecil, Sr. and Nellie Aldred Cecil. Jay was a devoted husband and a precious father, papa, brother, and friend. He was self-employed for many years and a member of Community Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ila Hodges Cecil of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Tiffany “Red” and the Rev. Scotty Bullins of Ararat, VA; two stepsons and their wives, Brad and Stephanie Dowell and Josh and Tara Dowell, all of Mount Airy; two precious granddaughters, Gracie Rae Bullins of Ararat, VA, and Emma Grace Dowell of Mount Airy; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Nancy Surratt of Mount Airy, Mattie Sue and Neil Easter of Mount Airy, and Teena and Calvin Moxley of South Carolina; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; many nieces and nephews; and his special companion and friend, Dusty. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cecil was preceded in death by his twin sister, Reitha Kaye Cecil Ramey; and two brothers, Bill Cecil and Bobby Cecil. A homegoing graveside service will be held Saturday, August 21, 2021, at 12:00 PM at Community Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Scotty Bullins and the Rev. Bradley L. Quesinberry officiating. Due to public health concerns, the family will receive friends Saturday from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the cemetery. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
