Mr. Garriet Edward Toney, 79, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday night, March 9, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Toney was born January 6, 1930, in Rutherford County, the son of the late Robert Vance and Annie Mae Blanton Toney. He was a retired teaching assistant from Surry County Schools and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Ed served as music director in various Baptist churches for more than 40 years throughout North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. Mr. Toney also served as music director for the Surry Baptist Association from 1990 to 2000. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Pauline Hicks Southern Toney of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Bill Harbison of Brunswick, GA, and Vanessa and David Allen of Hiddenite; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Debbie Toney of Belden, MS; a stepson and his wife, Eric and Alisha Southern of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Heather Fleenor and Josh Grindstaff, both of Hiddenite, Jason Toney of Newton, and Addison Southern of Mount Airy; two great-grandchildren, Mariah Fleenor of Hiddenite and Ezra Toney of Newton; a sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Alfred Causby of Bostic; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernest and Eunice Toney and Wayne and Audrey Toney, all of Kings Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Toney was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille Butler Toney; and a sister, Helen Toney Davis. The funeral service will be held Thursday, March 12, 2009, at 10:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Tim Burton officiating. Burial will follow in the Drury Dobbins Baptist Church Cemetery in Ellenboro. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
