George Wayne Hayes

Mr. George Wayne Hayes, 80, of 6222 West Pine Street, Mount Airy, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 5, 2008, while peacefully at his home. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Mr. Hayes was born December 14, 1927, in Surry County, son of the late George and Susie Mayes Hayes. He served our country in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a farmer, retired from McLean Trucking Company as an over-the-road driver for 29 years, and an honorary Kentucky Colonel. He served as a deacon at Ladonia Baptist Church for many years, was a 32nd degree mason, having been a member of Round Peak Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years, and was a Shriner. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Jones Hayes of the home; three daughters, Karen Hayes Bowlin of Winston-Salem, and Sheila Hayes Ramey and husband, Larry, and Susie Hayes Wright, all of Lowgap; a son, George Wayne Hayes, III, and wife, Laurie, of White Pine, TN; seven grandchildren, Gerald Bowlin and wife, Alysa, Alan Wright, and Shannon Ramey Slate and husband, Daryl, all of Mount Airy, Zachary Ramey and wife, Mandy, and Amanda Wright, all of Lowgap, and Nathaniel Wayne Hayes and Dylan Farmer, both of White Pine, TN; five great-grandchildren, Lyndsay Reppond Bowlin and Brandon Reppond Bowlin, both of Mount Airy, Luke Ramey and Falisaty Ramey, both of Lowgap, and Adam Slate of Mount Airy; and a sister, Arlene H. Simcox of Lowgap. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by six brothers, Cody Hayes, Acus Hayes, Welch Hayes, Bob "A.H." Hayes, Dale Hayes, and Raymond Hayes. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at 3:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Sammy Lawson and the Rev. Tony Holder. Burial will follow in the Ladonia Baptist Church Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
