George Wallace King

Mr. George Wallace King, 86, of 1528 West Pine Street, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2009, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born August 14, 1923, in Surry County, to the late Wilburn and Annie Thacker King. He was a member of the Round Peak Masonic Lodge and was employed at Mount Airy Furniture Company for 45 years. Mr. King was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. He saw action in Germany, France, and Belgium with the 78th division 903 Artillery Headquarter. He loved the outdoors, camping, hunting, and fishing with his friends, Walter Leach, Jack Smith, Edd East, the late Herman Haynes, and the late Dr. Lloyd Grimes. On June 11, 1948, he was married to Martha Daphne Goins. He is survived by his wife, Martha Daphne Goins King of the home; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Brenda and Phil George of High Point, Karen and Larry Frye of Stone Mountain, GA, Jill King of King, and Jan Powell of Morrisville; six granddaughters and their spouses, Jennifer and Rob Nowicki, Stephanie and Newell Edenfield, Natalie Frye, Emily and Jared Jessee, Courtney George, and Brooke Johnson; a grandson, Hunter Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Addison Nowicki and Rede Jessee; a brother, J.C. King of Mount Airy; four sisters-in-law, Shirley Simmons, Nell King, Ann King, and Ruby Midkiff King; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. King was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Kuykendall; and four brothers, Vance King, Jim King, Tom King, and Harry W. King. A graveside services will be held Sunday, August 23, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Full Masonic Burial Rites will be conducted by Round Peak Masonic Lodge #616 AF and AM and full military rites will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oxford Orphanage, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565; Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or to the Antioch Baptist Church, 137 Antioch Avenue, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
