Mr. George Edgar Oliver, 67, of 181 Old US 52 South, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, October 2, 2010, at his home. Mr. Oliver was born January 3, 1943, in Surry County, son of the late Dr. Otis and Helen Meyer Oliver. He had several managerial positions with the last being with the water department for the city of Mount Airy. He attended the Mount Airy City Schools, Campbell University, and Surry Community College. He was a disabled veteran, having served in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967 as a combat photographer with the 1st Infantry Division of the United States Army. On one particular mission, Dan Rather, former CBS news anchor, accompanied him on a field operation into Viet Cong territory. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Otis M. "Bud" and Barbara Oliver of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law, Lennie Rosenbluth of Fort Myers, FL; a niece and her husband, Beth and Tucker Webster of Miami, FL; and two nephews and their wives, Marty and Christian Oliver of Pinehurst and Stephen and Amy Rosenbluth of Naples, FL. In addition to his parents, Mr. Oliver was preceded in death by a sister, Pat Oliver Rosenbluth; and a nephew, Todd Oliver. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at 1:00 PM at Oakdale Cemetery, with Dr. Roger B. Gilbert officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Adrian Griffin and Fred Reece for their care and concern of George throughout the years. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
