George Raymond Reavis, Jr


Mr. George Raymond Reavis, Jr., 81, of Mount Airy, passed away early Saturday morning, April 8, 2017, at his home. Mr. Reavis was born November 21, 1935, in Vance County, to the late George Raymond Reavis, Sr. and Madeline Hoyle Reavis. He retired as Chief Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force after 26 years of service to our country. George, one of the first teachers to start up the JROTC program at North Surry High School, taught there for 7 years. He was also known for his many years of service of substitute teaching and driving a school bus for North Surry and Gentry Middle School. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Dorothy Reavis; two daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Justin Hawks and Katherine and Gary Utt; two sons and a daughter-in-law, George and Elaine Reavis and Christopher Reavis; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; six sisters and five brothers-in-law, Anne Creech, Nancy and Lynn Barker, Frances and Henry Tucker, Jane and Edgar Wallin, Carolyn and Lynn Bullock, and Rose and Doc Power; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Peggy Reavis and Hoyle and Diane Reavis. In addition to his parents, Mr. Reavis was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Kaye Reavis; and three brothers, C.B. Reavis, Harold Reavis, and Page Reavis. The funeral service will be held Friday, April 14, 2017, at 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Luke Pyles officiating. Lennie Bullock and James Bond will be honorary speakers. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation or a foundation of choice.
