Mr. George Thomas Smith, 70, of 1416 Fancy Gap Road, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, November 13, 2010, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born March 30, 1940, in Surry County, to the late Edward Boston and Bessie Snow Smith. He was graduate of Franklin High School and DeVry Technical Institute. Mr. Smith served the area for many years as owner and operator of Smith Cash Register. Mr. Smith was a car enthusiast and a member of First Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Barbie Atkins Smith of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and David Massie of Greenville, SC, and Donna and Eric Moser of Salisbury; two grandchildren, Ethan Lee Moser and Matthew Rivers Moser, both of Salisbury; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Lawrence of Greensboro and Lucy and Alvin Hamilton of Hendersonville; and a brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Loretta Smith of Mount Airy. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Roger B. Gilbert and the Rev. Will Eads officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM in the Fireside Room at First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 714 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
