George R. Waugh, Jr.

Mr. George R. Waugh, Jr., 92, of Lexington, KY, passed away Friday, February 17, 2023.  He grew up in North Carolina, where his school education was balanced by working on the family tobacco farm and in their combined store and filling station.  When business was slow, he sketched superheroes of the day on the back of bread cartons.  As a boy, George crafted from wood scraps models of a Spanish galleon and a racing hydroplane.  Shortly after graduation from White Plains High School, he served in the United States Navy, operating a quad 40 mm anti-aircraft gun on an amphibious attack transport.  When discharged, George was employed in the bourgeoning field of thermoplastics, working his way up from a granulator operator in Carolina Plastics to the presidency of a vinyl extrusion facility in Florida.  He lived most of his life in the Sunshine State and greatly appreciated its balmy climate.  His last few years were lived in Kentucky.  Grilling shrimp, conversation with family and friends, reading the Bible (particularly the Apostle Paul’s epistles), and eating out with his wife, Margie, were things he enjoyed.  He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church in America for more than 40 years, and, at the time of his death, he attended Apostles Anglican Church in Lexington, KY.  He is survived by his family members that will miss him greatly, including his children, Karen Waugh and Barry (Sandy) Waugh; his granddaughter, Heather (John); his great-grandchildren, Hazel and Sylvia; his sisters, Shirley (Jack) Noffsinger and Evelyn (Sam) Taylor; as well as many beloved friends and extended family.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margie Jones Waugh; and his parents George R. Waugh, Sr. and Lucille Cable Waugh.  The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Dover Baptist Church, 178 Dover Church Road, Mount Airy.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family requests that instead of flowers a donation be made to Apostles Anglican Church, 200 Colony Boulevard, Lexington, KY  40502; or the building fund of Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 1105 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, SC  29650.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
