Mrs. Georgia Thomas Mayes, 80, of Lowgap, passed away Monday morning, July 3, 2023, at her home. Mrs. Mayes was born September 14, 1942, in Grayson County, VA, the daughter of the late George William Thomas and Era Amanda Dickens Thomas Golding. Georgia retired as a school nutrition worker from Cedar Ridge Elementary School and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mandy and Dale Lewis of Lowgap; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Mark Mayes, Daniel and Sandra Mayes, and Joseph Mayes, all of Lowgap; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Helena and Charlie Moncus of Mount Airy and Tina Golding of Lowgap; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Dickie and Helen Golding, Terry and Caroline Golding, and Bruce Golding, all of Lowgap; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend and companion, James Bedsaul of Lowgap. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mayes was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Edward Mayes; a son, Timothy Mayes; a sister, Christine Lowe; and a brother, Garnie Golding. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. No formal visitation will be held. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love, prayers, and compassion shown by their many friends and neighbors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain View Baptist Church, P.O. Box 68, Lowgap, NC 27024; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 1427 Edgewood Drive, Suite 101, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
