Mr. Gilbert Harvey Flinchum, 86, of 1994 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born September 17, 1923, in Surry County, to the late Edgar Jackson Flinchum, Sr. and Rena Mae Flinchum. Gilbert was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. He retired from Flinchum Oil Company and was a member of Bannertown Baptist Church, where he had served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, deacon, and a member of various boards. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Barnes Flinchum of the home; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sue and Dr. Hugh Sutphin and Geraldine Johnson, all of Mount Airy; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Hill Flinchum and Ludie Neal Flinchum, both of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Flinchum was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Everette Flinchum and Edgar Jackson Flinchum, Jr. The funeral service will be held Saturday, July 3, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Bannertown Baptist Church, with the Rev. Milton Sewell officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Bannertown Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bannertown Baptist Church, 1834 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express a "special thanks" to Doug Cook, a nephew, Peggy and Heather Bedsaul and Nancy Harold for the care given to Mr. Flinchum.
