Gloria Thornes

God called another angel home when he took our precious mother, Mrs. Gloria Shinault Gibson Thornes. She passed from Central Continuing Care, Thursday, January 6, 2022, after a time of declining health. Mrs. Thornes was born in Surry County, August 4, 1932, to the late Benjamin and Vader Poindexter Shinault. She was a dedicated Christian, and faithful member of Anchored In Jesus Baptist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir and fellowship with her church family. Mrs. Thornes was known as a wonderful cook, and Sunday dinner was a time cherished by her family. She and her sisters took many exciting trips together and now, “the golden girls” are back together. Mrs. Thornes worked at R. J. Reynolds for several years until a tragic accident prevented her from continuing work. Mrs. Thornes is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Watson; sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Becky Gibson, and Dale and Mattie Gibson; grandchildren and spouses, Daniel Gibson, Derek and Stephanie Watson, Melissa and Travis Leonard, Josh and Jessica Gibson; great grandchildren, Sydney, Christian, Aiden, Gavin, Eli, Jenna, Jordan, and Juliet; brothers and sisters-in-law, James Shinault, Wayne and Beulah Shinault, Wilbur Shinault, Alma Shinault; brother-in-law, Vernon Turner; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Thornes was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Thornes; her parents, Benjamin and Vader Poindexter Shinault; a son-in-law, Mike Watson; sisters, Frankie Turner, Gladys Hawks, and Alene Shinault; brothers, Wilson, Thomas, and Bobby Shinault; sisters-in-law, Katherine Shinault, and Jackie Shinault. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, January 10, 2022, at Little Mountain Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Watson, and Rev. Larry Stone officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at Central Continuing Care, and the caregivers, Linda, Carolyn, and Ida that assisted prior to her stay in the health care facility.
