Mr. Golie Young Southern, 86, of 124 Dakota Trail, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2011, at Central Continuing Care. Mr. Southern was born July 2, 1925, in Surry County, son of the late Joney Elzavan and Joanna Lowe Southern. Golie was a veteran of the United States Army and United States Navy. He retired as the owner and operator of Southern Upholstery and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 50 years. Mr. Southern was a member of the Franklin Community Volunteer Fire Department and was one of its charter firemen. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Jean Woodruff Southern of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, LuAnn and Jim Lovelace of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Beth Southern of Mount Airy; six grandchildren, Jeremy Miller of Asheville, Joseph Miller of Raleigh, and Joshua Miller, Jonathan Mabe, Hannah Southern, and Nathan Southern, all of Mount Airy; a sister, Marie Suggs of High Point; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Southern was preceded in death by two sisters, Razzie Watson and Lass Crotts; and six brothers, Reid Southern, Lacy Southern, R.B. Southern, W.A. Southern, Lincoln Southern, and Cephus Southern. The funeral service will be held Sunday, October 2, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex L. Martin and the Rev. Dale Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 9:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Sound System Fund, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030; Antioch Baptist Church, 137 Antioch Avenue, Mount Airy, NC 27030; Surry Shrine Club, P.O. Box 630, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or the Franklin Community Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 128, Toast, NC 27049. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
